How do you measure up for blinds?

Correct measuring is the key to easy, hassle-free installations, so it’s worth taking the time to get it right.

First of all, you’ll need a metal tape measure, a pencil, paper, and if needed a step ladder to get to high places.

FITTING INSIDE Recess

Recess fit is where the blind sits neatly the inside of the window frame.

To measure for recess fitted blinds simply measure the width of the inside of your window wall to wall.

Measure across the top, middle and bottom in millimetres and record the smallest measurement. This will ensure the blind will sit comfortably inside the window frame.

This measurement will allow for both the blind fabric and brackets.

Next measure the exact drop of the window recess. Again take three measurements. The left, the middle and the right and record the smallest measurement.

Note that we make a standard 10mm deduction to the width of all our recess-fitted blinds. This is to make sure the blinds sit perfectly inside your recess. All you need to do is provide us with the recess measurements. If you provide us with exact blinds size no deductions will be made. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FITTINGS OF OUR BLINDS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR SIDE FITTING INSIDE THE RECESS. YOU WILL NEED TO INSTALL THEM ON THE TOP OF THE RECESS.

Fitting outside recess

Fitting outside recess is where the blind sits on the outside of the window frame.

First measure the outside width of the window frame.

Measure across the top, middle and bottom in millimetres and this time record the largest measurement.

With the width, we recommend at least an 8cm overlap outside the frame, particularly if you have a blackout blind and are concerned about light leakage

Next measure the outside drop of the window, starting from the point at which you’d like your blinds to sit above the window, down to the point at which you’d like your blinds to finish.

Again take three measurements. The left, the middle and the right and record the largest measurement.

When looking at drop, check for any obstructions that might stop your blind hanging freely.

NOTE: Consider the “staking” height of your roman blind when fully drawn up, approx 20cm will be

covered by fabric. When fitting outside your recess allow extra drop above your window for the stacking.

When measuring for both inside and outside recess please ensure that you check for any obstructions (such as handles) that might stop your blind hanging freely.

Child Safety Information when measuring for blinds

We need to know the installation height so we can make sure the chain or cord is at least 1.5 metres from the floor.

To get this measurement, you simply measure from the floor to the top of your blind.  This is called the ‘installation height’ which will allow us to make sure that the cord when the blind is installed is at least 1.5m above the floor.
